A Kern County Animal Control officer has been caught on video allegedly abusing a dog while responding to a call in Kern County, California. The footage, which has gained attention online, shows Officer Tipton, who has been identified and confirmed by officials, reportedly beating and dragging a 2-year-old, 60-pound mixed-breed dog.
According to authorities, Officer Tipton responded to a call for a stray dog and, at one point, tranquilized the animal. The video then shows him allegedly dragging the dog back to his truck. Kern County Animal Services Director stated there was “no reason” for the officer’s actions as seen in the footage. Fortunately, a veterinarian later examined the dog and found no injuries.
The dog, which was wearing a collar, was scanned for a microchip, but none was found. Officials say they do not expect anyone to reclaim the dog, and they hope a 501(c)(3) rescue organization will step in. Interest from such groups has already been expressed.
Officer Tipton, a four-year veteran, is off duty until Monday. He will be questioned upon his return, after which a decision regarding his employment will be made. The Kern County Animal Services Commission will hear any appeals following the decision. An update is expected early next week.
